Description: This chapter examines two legal trends that are decoupling the exclusive link between nationality and citizenship, as European nation-states have transformed into countries of immigration. It presents the citizenship choices in the different EU member states for non-EU residents who want to participate in society with equal rights and responsibilities. The second part of the article uses country clustering for 25 EU member states, Norway, Switzerland and Canada to present a citizenship continuum.
