The Impact of Social Movements on Taiwan’s DemocracyAuthor(s): Stephen Philion Publisher(s): German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA), Hamburg, Germany Publication: Journal of Current Chinese Affairs Vol 39, No 3 (2010) Date of publication: 2010 From Page 149 to 163 Description: This article discusses and critiques the four preceding articles that comprise this volume on Taiwan’s social movement and democratization. The author argues that these articles suggest that while Taiwan’s social movements have made a clear impact on Taiwan’s democratization, they remain challenged by the neo-liberal orientation of elected governments, in both KMT and DPP forms. The article also provides brief comparison to East Asian NICs and Western experiences with social movements.
