The Future of Gas and the Role of LNG: Economic and Geopolitical ImplicationsAuthor(s): René SnijderPublisher(s): Elcano Royal Institute of International and Strategic Studies, Madrid, Spain Date of publication: 11 Mar 2008 Volume number: 2008 Issue number: 14 Format: PDF Pages: 23 URL: www.realinstitutoelcano.org Series: Elcano Royal Institute Working Papers Description: This working paper provides an overview of the economic, regulatory and geopolitical implications of the trend toward a greater natural gas import dependency of the major natural gas markets and the potential for liquefied natural gas (LNG). The author explains that in the emerging global gas market, LNG plays an increasingly important role in meeting the demand for natural gas in the EU, the US and Asia. However, he argues that LNG is limited by the investment constraints on the accelerated building of liquefaction capacity.
